RE: Why Windows Server is the best
I can't stand windows. I find it to buggy and inefficient to run on my home PC's never mind on a server. Also while I understand my schools ICT people are probably idiots, but after seeing the state of my schools system I could never use windows on a server (I circumvent almost every block with my memory stick, PortableApps and a open notepad window to make Batch scripts).

Couldn't agree more. Plus, it seems your school and mine have a lot in common - including the ICT teachers level of knowledge Tongue

You need to expand your horizons. I could never imagine running just 1 OS on everything. Give some more OSs a try, there are honestly thousands out there.
We also have Windows laptops at home. My main desktop has Windows 7 on one partition and my old Pentium III has Windows XP along with Xubuntu. I also gave FreeBSD a try some time ago (I must admit I only played about 30 minutes with it, but anyways). Mac OS is probably the only OS I only tried once on a very old Mac at school (when there were Macs at school), much time ago. Sometimes I also use DOS on old computers and emulators.
But you see, that post I wrote allows you to see the popularity and versatility of the Linux kernel. I don't say Linux is perfect, that is not the truth in any way, but I find much more defects on Windows, specially when it comes to stability and security, and I'd never put Windows on a server if I could use Linux in that situation.

I always found it amusing that I probably know more programming languages and have for experience with computers than My head of ICT!

In the case of many schools/companies, windows servers are used because everyone's desktop runs Windows and AD works better and is more featured than samba (samba 4 is supposed to narrow the gap, but I've never tried it). At the same time, most sysadmins that I've met are lazy and just go with what is easiest and don't always maintain everything properly.

I find OpenBSD to be more stable and secure than Linux Tongue

Linux is definitely popular and versatile. I just think that it doesn't deserve to be as popular as it is. Well, comparatively. It should have a higher market share than now in comparison to Windows, but more elegant OSs like FreeBSD deserve to be more popular than they currently are. But anyways, that's a different argument.

Anyway, you should use whatever OS is best suited to the application. Just throwing on Linux because you like it best when Windows does the particular job better is silly imo.

Thats of couse true, but in general I would avoid windows in the same way as I avoid major injory. If its necasary then go ahead but otherwise, if you can do without than...
