For the font issue, try installing dejavu-sans-fonts , or better yet just install all dejavu fonts. Though they should have been installed automatically when you installed gnome. That's probably a packaging issue, you should probably open a bug for SL6. I already used the user ZNC for ZNC, now I also use it for VNC .
