RE: Free 613MB Xen VPS
Had one, the performance is nice, network is good, but the registration requires phone verification and a valid credit card, and bear in mind there's a I/O trap that you may be forced to pay if you exceed that.

With a blocked account at least you have no surprises of invoicing.

RE: Free 613MB Xen VPS
Ah, yes. I've always wished that Amazon S3 would have a fixed priced instead of one that bills you on how much you use.
I mean, the part where it bills you on how much you use would make it cheaper, but it's harder to predict how many requests or how much bandwidth you'll use in a month. |

RE: Free 613MB Xen VPS
In addition to S3, you could use EBS, which is SAN disk - you can resize it as you want. However, you to have an instance to mount it on.
Even with a 3-year prepay for heavy use, etc., the micro is going to cost you $7 or 8 a month as I recall. IP is free, but otherwise you pay $0.01 an hour if you're not using it and want to keep the number reserved. (Doesn't sound like much, but it's 74 cents a month :-) S3 is awful price-wise for web hosting. On the other hand, it's superb for backups - only pay for the exact amount you use, not some vendor's package levels. I use s3cmd for this daily. RE: Free 613MB Xen VPS
Does Amazon show you how much bandwidth you are using or the requests you have used in real-time?
Requests: http://aws.amazon.com/s3/ The "Request Pricing" part of that page. |

RE: Free 613MB Xen VPS
I don't know how real-time it is - but on a daily basis at least. Probably better than that.
Yeah, if you rsync it isn't great because you burn through requests. On the other hand, storing a single tarball is only one PUT. Someone could sign up for the free tier, allocate 22GB of EBS (8GB for the root), and then do snapshots to S3. S3 snapshots are sweet - the first is a full, subsequent are incrementals based on it. If you delete the first, the second is brought up to a full first, etc. VPSadvice.com - discuss VPS providers, read reviews, get help, share opinions |
