I think that it's because OpenVZ uses templates instead of having to download and install packages which you would need to do on a normal laptop.
So, when you reinstall to Centos 6 on an OpenVZ VPS, it just untars the template into a folder.

ANd that's what I hate about openvz: its like having all linux files in a folder and a program executing them. Well, it is not good imho.

Yes the reason is that it uses templates, which are made on a larger memory VPS first, but the reason is that CentOS's installer has a hard requirement for at least 384mb of ram (I have no idea if this is artificial or if it seriously needs that much). If it was downloading and installing packages you'd be able to install it on a 64mb box.
