useradd minecraft
mkdir ~minecraft/minecraft
cd ~minecraft/minecraft
wget http://ci.bukkit.org/job/dev-CraftBukkit/promotion/latest/Recommended/artifact/target/craftbukkit-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar
chown -R minecraft:minecraft ./
nano -w ../start.sh;chmod 755 ../start.sh

In the screen that opens, paste:

cd ~minecraft/minecraft
sudo -u minecraft java -Xincgc -Xmx800m -jar craftbukkit-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.jar

Change the 800 to 80% of your VPSs total RAM in MB.

To start the server, run

screen ~minecraft/start.sh

If you want it to start on boot, add

Code:

screen -S bukkit -dmS ~minecraft/start.sh

to the end of /etc/rc.local

All of minecraft's files will be in ~minecraft/minecraft

nano ~minecraft/minecraft/server.properties after you start and stop the server once.

If you can reconnect without restarting the server then it's a network issue between you and the VPS.
