YOU MUST FIX YOUR DNS BEFORE YOU REGISTER! DO NOT CHANGE STEPS, OR SKIP STEPS!

Hello there, here is a tutorial on how to get a free .geek / .oss/ .null / .ing / .free / .bbs / .gopher / .indy domain name!

Step 1: Click the Start menu, select Control Panel from the menu.

Step 2: On Windows XP: Find the Network Connections icon and open it (If you don't see the icons, go over to the side and click 'Switch to classic view'.).

On Windows Vista / 7: Click "Network and Internet", then "Network and Sharing Center", and open "Manage network connections".

Step 3: Now you will need to open the "Properties" dialog for your main Internet connection. Example: My connection is a Broadband connection, and is labeled 'Local Area Connection 1'.
Right click on the icon to invoke the menu, and click the "Properties" option.


Step 4: Next, in the "Connection Properties" dialog that appeared, you will need to scroll down and highlight the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" (don't click on the "check box" as this will disable this protocol). Once the Protocol is highlighted, click on the "Properties" button. This will open a dialog for the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties".

Step 5: If the "Obtain DNS Server automatically" section is in use, you will need to change it to "Use the following DNS server addresses" and then click on the "Advanced" button.

If there are already addresses in the "Preferred DNS server" and "Alternate DNS server" sections, simply click on the "Advanced" button.
Then click the DNS tab.


Then input the following DNS servers:
217.79.186.148
178.63.26.173
178.63.26.174

Step 5: Now click OK on all of the windows, and you may be asked to reboot. If so, do so.

Step 6: Now it's time to actually register your domain! Go to http://www.opennicproject.org/home.php and choose the type of domain you want to register.


Then go to the registration page, and type in the name you want.


Then click find, and add to my portfolio.


Then you need to register.


Then login, and research and add to portfolio.

Then input your email in the first slot, select the registration years, and select if you want to use their nameservers or yours. If you choose yours, then you must type them in.


Then, you'll get Congratulations!
The registration was successful
The domain is yours!

The way this guide is done leads to having the domain pointing to your computer; with a change on some steps you can setup the domain to use the IP of a server instead of your computer.

PS: just checked and it seems most of the sites http://www.opennicproject.org/home.php points to are down. Too bad.

Decent tutorial, but the problem with these "TLDs" is that you need to use OpenNICs DNS servers to access them. Kind of defeats the purpose imo if everyone can't use the TLD to access your website. Most of them are down anyway when using OpenNIC's DNS servers.

yes you have have to use opennic dns servers for that
and that's the problem
if some one is not using the opennic server then he can't access your website.

i think this will not help as name server is different thing and local dns server is diffrent!!

For many days I've been looking for the correct tutorial with appropriate DNS settings, many thanks for this great tuto at this small forum. Gonna check the rest of the forum this day.

I tried it with OpenNIC, but it's lame, every guy who wants to visit your site has to set their DNS.
I have it, it's easy but failing with DNS/NS (or i haven't tried it out).
