What type of music do you listen?
Ok So this thread is not about what you listen to right now but generally ?
I listened pop music like Ricky Martin, J.Lo (back then she was just Jenifer Lopez) and other mainstream stuff when I was in primary school. Later I liked techno, trance, psy trance, house etc. Guys like Marc Van Linden, Paul Van Dyke, Tiesto, Van Buuren etc. But now I like heavy metal/hard rock. I listened to a bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Nightwish. These 3 are the most common on my playlist. But I know for other bands as ACDC, Guns n Roses, Slayer, Anthrax, Helloween, Iced Earth, Hammerfall, etc etc. So enough for me to know which genre of metal is played by which band. I like heavy/thrash/power/symphonic metal . As for other genres like death, black, doom, groove, ghotic I don't like those. All those depressive metal stuff is so boring to me. Good thrash played by Metallica or Megadeth is just fine by me. I call that melodic thrash since there all a lot of soloing and a lot of melodic parts in the songs. But underground thrash is just so non melodic and rumbling. I don't like it at all. I know of the Big Four of Thrash, The Big Three of Teutoinc Thrash, The Bay Area Thrash and how later extreme genres (black and death) came out of it. For me Master of Puppets and Rust in Piece are the best albums but there are people who know better then me about it. As for the non Big Four band I can say Overkill, Testament and Annihilator are the best. |

RE: What type of music do you listen?
It sounds to me that you would be more into Death Metal than Thrash. Yes, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Sepultura are all classified as thrash metal, but that more because when they formed thrash metal was the most extreme thing at the time. Certainly, pretty much all of those bands' first album(s) were thrash but they evolved into more of Death Metal imo (well not Metallica). However, many people will disagree with me on that. Technically speaking, Melodic Thrash is a contradiction.
Anyway, I pretty much listen to everything but Rap, Hip Hop, and Pop. My favorite genres are Death (specifically Melodic Death), Symphonic, Folk, Power, Progressive, and Black metal. I'm one of those odd Metalheads that listen to pretty much every genre of Metal. Melodic Technical Black Death is my favorite genre though .

I'm into folk right now, but always love to hear some indie-pop release.

RE: What type of music do you listen?
@f8ll Wrong. I am not in Death because I don't listen to Slayer. I've only heard couple of their songs and I said to my self "This is thrash? No way, this is death". I don't know why word "melodic thrash" is a contradiction but that's the way I describe music of Metallica and couple of their songs. Underground thrash is so rumbling with no melodic parts in it. If you say it's contradiction then present why.
And I forgot a bout folk metal. A friend of mine gave me the links for Ensiferum. I loved it. And even those mild growls didn't bother me. Still I prefer songs with no growling. Melodic Death can be good if there are no growling in it. I listened Arch Enemy a little . That Angela girl can growl but I've listened also covers from bands like Iron Maiden by death metal bands. They just butchered those great songs. |

I listen to Binaural beats and I like theta range(2 Hz) very much. Sometimes, I listen to Progressive White noise.

RE: What type of music do you listen?
This reminded me of John Petrucci and Progressive Metal. I only listened to Dream Theater as for that genre but live shows by Petrucci are also great.

If you say it's contradiction then present why. lol, Slayer is more thrashy than Metallica or Megadeth (well not Megadeth's first album). Thrash metal is, well, supposed to sound thrashy, aggressive, in your face - at least by the modern definition, which is why those "underground" bands don't sound melodic. At least to me, you can't have something sound thrashy while also melodic. You can definitely have melodic elements in it, as you can in any genre, but if its so melodic that it's half of the genre definition I wouldn't be able to call it thrash anymore. The definition of Thrash, Death, and other genres have evolved over time as more and more metal genres sprung up. So technically you aren't wrong I suppose. If this was the late 80s/early 90s thrash would have a much broader definition. But these days there are subgenres for subgenres (i.e. Thrashing Black Death), so much so that many people feel that these definitions detract from the metal genre (I tend to disagree). Anyway, I wouldn't take most of the big popular bands as representatives of any genre. You really need to listen to many different bands to get a good idea of a genre imo. Ensiferum is indeed a pretty awesome band. You may want to consider giving Norther a listen, and possibly Finntroll and Wintersun. Anyway, I don't consider Arch Enemy to be good Melodic Death or be a good representation of the genre. Try listening to mid-beta(28 hz). This is great for relaxation.

RE: What type of music do you listen?
@f8ll
Well I get that Slayer is more thrash then Metallica and Megadeth. In fact the only true thrash song by Metallica is "Fight fire with fire". But all that rumbling that I hear when listen to Slayer just makes my brain boil. I lice melodic stuff so that is why I choose Metallica over others. Yes they are (maybe) sellouts and not so thrash like others but they got the best out of their name and music. I just searched Norther on youtube. I will see what they have to offer. ![]() As for the definitions of metal sub genres I think that there are so much sub genres that definitions loose meaning. Just doom metal has like 5 major subgenres and some others. What about heavy from the 70s and 80s . Maiden, Priests, Sabath (didn't listen them much but they invented half of the metal) etc. Also what about Nightwish?

RE: What type of music do you listen?
For me, music is radio. I always tend to stay in the borders of soul, jazz, funk or electronica with occasional jumps rock but my musical path still is evolving - mainly through listening to different world-wide radio stations. Alternative or unsigned / uknown artists are the key to get my musical attention which is why I choose to listen to smaller local (LPFM) or alternative student radio stations.
Do you guys still have some love for radio? |
