How do you make a minecraft server work.
I sort of need full instructions. Do you need to install an OS, if so , how?
If you need an OS, is linux the best to run?
I think java comes pre installed - Does it?
If there is an OS with a GUI or even command line is fine, I know how to execute and stop the minecraft server.

Is there a way to send files to the VPS, IE the minecraft server .jar file?

Thanks very much for any help in advanced
Chris

Is 256MB of RAM enough to run a server with about 5 people? No more than 10 would be on the server at any time.

Thanks

RE: How do you make a minecraft server work.
The VPSes come with a OS preinstalled. CentOS in the most cases. In SolusVM you can reinstall to the Linux Distro you like.

As we do not offer Windows VPSes (some providers allow you to install Windows but only when you have a license) you have to stay with a Linux VPS which is much better for such a server. 123systems banned java processes, LoomHost banned Minecraft servers and URPad also banned Minecraft servers.

The OS come without a GUI you can install one if you wish but GUIs use more resources so less will be left for the server.

You can transfer files to your VPS via WinSCP or simply download the files from the webserver via wget or curl.

256MB could handle 3 - 6 people on a very small map.

You can find more on Google and so on...

RE: How do you make a minecraft server work.
Thanks for the reply, these forums get very fast replies. I think I'll put Linux/Ubuntu on the VPS server and there wouldn't be anymore than 5-6 people on at a time anyway. I'll read through those tutorials and consult Google for more.

I can live without a GUI just fine. Smile

You said about downloading files, but what about uploading?

Thanks again

You can upload and download files with SFTP/SCP

WinSCP also uploads files, it's a program that handles file transfer and more over SSH.

Does it use much resources? I need the resources for the minecraft server

WinSCP is a client that you have to use. Nothing has to be installed on the VPS.

For a minecraft server, take these rough figures into account:

~100MB memory for system + other processes

~50-60 MB of memory per each user.

You'll start having serious lag problems otherwise.

RE: How do you make a minecraft server work.
That's a bit wrong calculated my friend.

You disable every, almost every service running until your VPS uses 5 - 8MB of RAM.

Instead of using normal Java you use IBM Java which uses less RAM than the normal one.

Then you have a system that uses barely RAM when running a empty server and on a small map the players won't use much memory.

Yeep, bit out. I think there was other stuff running at the time (Online map). The map wasn't exactly small either.
