Server Management Wish
2012, Linux based servers have been around since the dawn of the internet and we still don't have any decent server management tools.

Yes there is Webmin and that's in my opinion the best that's free.
There's also cPanel which I love, but it costs hundreds in licencing fees.

Why can't we get a great open source system that's just as good as the rest? I'm tempted to build one my self, but it would require all sorts of C/C++/Py programming that would require tons of testing with software like Apache, MySQL and PHP. It seems to be a massive task.

And the point of this thread...
If there was a server management tool that was free like Webmin, and just as powerful, feature packed, and easy to use like cPanel... what features would you include, what would you call it, and how would you go about doing it.

As for 'going about doing it'... I'm asking you what languages you would use, and what distributions you would target it at.

Develop a great style for Webmin and it will surpass CPanel. You don't need to reinvent the wheel.

RE: Server Management Wish
Webmin is slightly more complicated. While this is fine for those with experience, cPanel does simplify and offer more automation. Such a process couldn't be implemented to Webmin with just a theme. One of the reasons I favour cPanel is you can add websites and domains without ever touching a configuration file. I can guarantee you'll have to open a configuration file sooner or later when using Webmin.

What about Virtualmin? Isn't it easier to use and setup than Webmin?

RE: Server Management Wish
There's also Foxlor, BoxCtl, ISPconfig etc. However it would be awesome if you would build your own, with the support of some users here, I may also pop in and help you too Wink

RE: Server Management Wish
I think the problem is that people who know how to make these panels either prefer a plethora of options and configurations, or prefer just doing it manually. since that gives you greater control.
