VPN routes all traffic and usually has faster connection.

But don't you usually have to install a program or something to connect to it?

Only on the server side, the client side you don't need 3rd party software.

I'm pretty sure that you do need some sort of software for it to work on your computer. For example, I was something called http://cyberghostvpn.com/ and it requires you to download some program to make it work on your computer

proxies use less resources and has less overhead, so it is should be faster. infinity is correct that a VPN will route all outgoing traffic, proxies may not depending on how it configured on the client.

It depends on what kind of VPN you want to use. OpenVPN will require software to be installed on the client and server side. You also need to have a TUN/TAP device enabled on your VPS, not all VPSs have this enabled by default. PPTP support is built into windows, so you don't need client software for that, but it is somewhat inferior and less secure.
