RE: How to select a good desktop/laptop
To get good value for your money, I suggest you research for reviews regarding the best value hardware for what application you will be using your desktop/laptop.
I usually search for review on sites like Phoronix, AnandTech, Tom's Hardware, etc... If those site don't have reviews for hardware parts available on your local stores then you can try to search for their reviews on Google, maybe other sites have some article about them. Nowadays its hard to keep up with the latest and greatest hardware for desktop/laptop, just a few months and the model that you bought could be super-seeded/surpassed by new ones specially by the competing brands. Unless money is not an object for you then you can buy the latest and greatest every time it comes out on the market. Thanks FreeVPS.us! for the free VPS and for all the knowledge that I've learned here at the forum. |

RE: How to select a good desktop/laptop
So if someone is wanting to have a computer with lots of power for running VMs, video encoding, etc, for a project on a low budget (like $300 - $400), would it be better to go with something like a 2004 Xeon processor and get a motherboard with DDR2 RAM, or would it be better to go with something newer like 2006 or 2008 Xeon?
I think for a GPU, a Radeon 5830 might do best. |

RE: How to select a good desktop/laptop
This is an idea for the ssd addition
SSD= solid-state drive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive With a SSD you can boot your system very fast (with good hardware etc. it is possible to boot in under 10 seconds) and let's you start programs faster. 1 GB space of SSD= about 2 Dollars There are SSDs and Hybrid SSD/HDD The Hybrid SSD/HDD are sometimes used in Laptops you have about 20 GB of SSD and 320 GB HDD (This is just an example of a Laptop I know) The SSDs are a viable in 64, 128 and 256 GB versions. |

RE: How to select a good desktop/laptop
You should find for discounts. I have a 6 years old PC. It is old, I know, and I want to buy a new computer in this year, or the other.
I'll use it for playing new games.
