[SOLVED] Can't install Dropbox
#1
Hello,

I had a few VPSs in the last months (trials and from other forums).
I could use Dropbox on all of them.
Except this:
This a VPS from VPSBit, it uses XEN virtualization.

I have Ubuntu 14.04 x86 freshly installed.

I followed the official Dropbox tutorial: https://www.dropbox.com/install?os=lnx
"Dropbox Headless Install via command line
The Dropbox daemon works fine on all 32-bit and 64-bit Linux servers. To install, run the following command in your Linux terminal."

Code:
cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86" | tar xzf -

Terminal

root@vps:~# cd ~ && wget -O - "https://www.dropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86" | tar xzf -

Until this everything is Ok.
So go to the second step.

"Next, run the Dropbox daemon from the newly created .dropbox-dist folder."

Code:
~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd

"If you're running Dropbox on your server for the first time, you'll be asked to copy and paste a link in a working browser to create a new account or add your server to an existing account. Once you do, your Dropbox folder will be created in your home directory."

Here comes the problem.
It should show a link repeatedly in every 5 seconds. But nothing happens...

Terminal

root@vps:~# ~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd

I hope you can either run browser directly on your vps ( installed desktop environments) or you know how to do ssh-tunnel and use that in firefox to appear as if you are browsing from your vps ip. Therefore I will just tell you how to retrieve your link -

get the python script from here

dl.dropbox.com/u/340607/pyDropboxValues.py?dl=1

or For Python < 2.6 Users: http://pastebin.com/eKymSQ1w

save in your path and make it executable.

next run this command

"pyDropboxValues.py _linkurl"

without the quote ofcourse.

you will be presented with the link. you can also just run pyDropboxValues.py and see multitude of config informations.

hope it helps. Thanks

Re.- May be you could download the dropbox.py script from that page and use to check on things and do it auto from the start after you have stopped the deamon if it is already running.

dropbox --help or --list or --install etc.
Many thanks to Freevps, Chris (cw1998), The Guy( ID 4810), ZXPlay and the staff for my vps.

I get this:

pyDropboxValues.py
http://paste.ubuntu.com/12732932/

dropbox.py
http://paste.ubuntu.com/12732938/

Actually you can open the link given by dropboxd in any browser (don't have to be your vps browser). Also you have to leave the dropboxd running while you sign in via the link.

I know because I just set it up in my koding.com VM and it works fine. Not sure what's the issue with the VPS Bit machine...

By the way, that "pyDropboxValues.py" script is outdated - in my installation at least, the config.db is in ~/.dropbox/instance1/config.db whereas the script looks for ~/.dropbox/config.db

Also, I found an unofficial Dropbox wiki page on headless installation which might contain some helpful information. It looked like it hasn't been updated for a while though, so your mileage may vary.

Missing dependencies perhaps? Bad coding of that Dropbox program might not tell you that you lack some important dependencies like some python packages.

Do you know what those programs require? If so check if everything of that is installed on your server and has the necessary version.

Based HR's suggestion I googled to dependencies  and I found this site:
askubuntu.com

I installed an older version a Dropbox which told me that what was missing.
Then I installed the missing dependencies  and then I get the LINK.

Then I went to Dropbox's website on my Windows PC, but it didn't accept the link, always displayed an error message.
Then I upgraded this old Dropbox version (2.1) to the newest (3.1) and voilà I could get a really working link.

Thank you all of you, especially to HR!
