Free SSL Providers!

@MichaelW @rpark

StartSSL was bought "under the table" (i.e: through a UK shell company) by the owner of wosign. StartSSL hasn't had any security issues yet, but wosign really has, and they're not taking the proper steps to correct them. A lot of people are manually un-trusting wosign's CA for that reason. I would stick with LE at this point.

What exactly is the deal with alphassl anyway? Is the free cert not legitimately generated or something? I don't get it.

No, it's not legit whatsoever. HR himself called it a "fraud".

So, here it is.

This dude on LET (Fidde) bought a dedi at SingleHop. He knows that SingleHop offers free AlphaSSL. Behind SH's back, he uses their API to generate SingleHop internal-use only AlphaSSL certificates, which he then gives to people who are not on SH's network.

Thus, it's not legit.

That's what I was worried about. Now I remember that post too. I'm just surprised we allowed something so shady on this thread.

I can vouch for Let's Encypt. I have been using their service for the past year for my organization's domains. We use CertBot on our VPS and the process for renewing the certificates is fairly simple.

Shall I remove it from the thread?

Probably I will use Let's Encrypt for SSL on my website. FVPS is using it, right? Anyways, that is a good list of free ssl providers.
Thanks FreeVPS.us and Hostigation for VPS 18

ZeroSSL and SSLForFree should be listed under LetsEncrypt. They're both using LE as their cert provider.
