Stephen Hawking says we've got about 1,000 years to find a new place to live

I personally do not believe we will be able to facilitate a way to actually time travel, but that's just my own opinion. The way technology is advancing right now isn't that fast but with a lot of focus on what's beyond earth, there is a possibility that we could find another planet that will allow us to survive on it.

The World was also supposed to end in year 2000...

@Revenge and 2012, we've got a movie for that too haha.

Anyway, back to topic: I am really fascinated about the space and galaxy stuff but in my opinion, saying that earth will end in next 1000 years is simply legitimate, as stephen ain't gotta be alive by that time, neither do all of us (maybe some of us who do lot of mediation), so who cares.

It was actually problem with the movie name too they picked the year so close the current at that time. 2012, even if it was 2099, it could be more believable or maybe suspense but anyway.

Earth end is not predictable, who knows we gonna get hit by another big meteor coming toward us at the speed of some lightyears from another galaxy? I mean it's really wide topic and stephen got the popularity he can say anything and we gotta believe him! No hard feelings, nevermind Stephen fans

So Say We All

I have a theory that we are systematically destroying ourselves. On the one hand we are working hard at being fit and do all of the right things to live longer, however we have a huge population explosion problem where there are less and less quality resources to go around and only a small percentage of the total population have access to quality resources. Like the food we eat today - unless we've grown the food ourselves - is not the same as ten years ago. Most food these days is supplied en masse for a market of hundreds to thousands of people at a time - i.e. mass produced. It all comes in fancy containers (that are a source of pollution as well) - like some food is wrapped in multiple wrappings. The wrappings in their own right can be harmful to the food but also to the environment. The amount of garbage we are generating every day is unimaginable - particularly electronic gadgets and toys - cell phones that should last for a life time are built with obsolescence in mind to get people to buy the next model. Life to me is a complete paradox. People know what is good for them, but are so greedy and focused on self, in the meanwhile the world resources are shrinking - few real forests around any longer, oceans are being polluted en mass as well. I wonder whether human beings as a species have been designed for self-destruction out of competitive greed and self interest, and since there are too many of them around, they're about to destroy earth as well. I'm beginning to think 1000 years are optimistic.

I'm also wondering (while I'm thinking about the topic), what about other events that can happen like a giant meteor hitting earth, or a giant volcano under Yellow Stone Park or other natural events? Wonder whether Hawkings calculated those into the 1000 year number?

If you said so, perhaps no need to wait for 1000 years. A 3rd world war will be enough to destroy almost everything on Earth.

Well personally I don't think we would last another 1000 years if the current situation continues. There is the treat of world war 3 which would be an end game. Some of terrorist org pinch a nuke and drop somewhere else it would become an all out war. Also even if humans don't kill them selves I heard Yellowstone super volcano is over due for like 70,000 years now. Plus all kinds of natural disasters happening around including 2 devastating Tsunamis within a decade.

Maybe Earth has decided it's time for humans wipe out like Dinosaurs. Well at least they lasted couple of hundred million years unlike us. Funny thing is everyone spending billions for creating new weapons but no contingency plan for event like end of human race.

first I would like to point out that if you add up all the probabilities for our earth's destruction over the time earth has been hurtling through space, it becomes a pretty bigger number, an almost certainty that we are evolved ghosts or may be earth is already gone and we are living in a virtual reality experiment substrate housed close to sun. Lol

But jokes apart, I guess all that awesome dude is trying to do by these forecasts is to create/foster more Elon musk type endeavors, increased general awareness and concern, may be intergovernmental collaboration at a never before seen level.

Another idea I often have is probability is just another of our clever models to simplify and predict stuff. This is not the ruleset governing the machinations behind reality.

I believe we won't be running at the speed of light. It will be holes through space with energy supplied using stars. By then we will have mastered our biology enough to be able to free our biological brain matters from its crippling dependence on this fragile support system we call body. May be we will have even become electronic brains. Andy you won't be riding rocket ships with heavy hard armoured structures. It will be some kind of field effect that will keep us from radiations.

I guess we will also have understood and make peace with the ideas of no god and that we are nothing but a dream of dancing matters. That there is no specialty in the sense in which we believe we use the word i, which will have the effect that time travel would be pointless even if it were possible. That the question"what matters ?" is itself meaningless without a certain subjective point of view. I hope we will be in a post scarcity world of educated selfless people who have understood the meaning of Wittgenstein's words and are still happy playing with the world around them and exploring and giving meaning to it as they see fit.

May be it will be like the world depicted in The culture series only full of Jedi knights.

Lol

Human race has been gone through a lot and all kind of stuff. Terrible war lords, plagues, natural disasters etc etc and still survived. So I think we will able to hold on for few more thousand years at least.

But who knows. Anything could happen.

Well now every country got nuclear weapons, any moment a nuclear war could happen and u could kiss earth goodbye. I think we should hurry and go to mars and build s-it there to live after earth is fked
