I think you can not restore the messages without uninstalling.

Another Suggestion:
If your device is rooted, you can backup current whatsapps with data using Titanium Backup application. Then uninstall current one and install new one and restore the message. You can restore your original one anytime using Titanium backup.

I remember I once copied my backup to the local whatsApp/Databases folder and it worked. But it was quite long time ago and was for an older whatsApp version. Not sure if it can work now.

Why do you want to restore the messages? Wouldn't it be enough to just be able to read them? I agree with other members that you can't restore the messages without uninstalling Whatsapp, but you can read your messages without uninstalling Whatsapp.

1. Go to SD card > Whatsapp > Database
2. Select file called "msgstore.db.crypt". It contains messages of the same day.
3. Or if you want earlier ones search files like"msgstore-yyy-mm-dd.db.crypt". These files contain all sent and received messages for seven days.
4. Open file in simple text editor and you'll be able to read the messages.

It certainly is possible. whatsapp showed the option to restore messages once. but i chose to skip it , it happend couple of months ago after whatsapp was forced to stop when performing some task which resulted in a unresponsive whatsppp

It should. If you Google it there are plenty of ways that people use to decrypt the backup in a desktop computer. Here is one of them:

But all these techniques will result in lose of the messages received newly?
Means it only give the messages which were in old back up.
