Pooling of VPS resources to create own Cloud Server - pipe dream or reality?
#1
I was just wondering whether there is some script or desktop software where one could pool all of the resources of the VPSs one has into one dashboard to the equivalent of creating one's own Cloud Server?

For example if one has more than one VPS, to add all of the resources together as a cloud?  Become one's own cloud host?

Unfortunately not possible at the moment without massive overhead. sshfs (https://github.com/libfuse/sshfs) is great for pooling disks together though.

You might be looking for something like ImpactVPS's Virtual Dedicated Resources (although expensive): http://www.impactvps.com/vps.html
a lower package is available - 1GB. https://subnetlabs.com/billing/cart.php?a=add&pid=33
with code

Code:

it's $12/yr

Not possible. The only resource which might be interesting to combine between many different servers is storage. Although I/O might become quite slow using this method what could be possible is to have many back-end servers with a lot of storage and one front-end server which is serving all this data and able to cache the most accessed data on a fairly high storage volume. I have dreamt about doing something like this before, but hasn't really came around to attempt it yet. It's on my to-do list.

Just think about RAM/CPU which require extremely high throughput. Even your 1 Gbps would be drained and it wouldn't be any good, well even on the mobo itself long distances between the specs might be bad. This is why most servers which are called "cloud servers" is usually only the storage that is somewhat scaleable and cloud-based while the server itself is mostly non-cloud or can be upgraded manually/automatically from overcapacity present on-site.

Thanks for your excellent answer Erno.  I did pick up when I Googled the subject on people doing this for storage.  But of course none about combining VPS resources for hosting Websites that pool from all of their combined resources.
