I am going to talk about one issue that Hostigation has had ever since they moved their location in the datacentre and that has been one of the reasons I've dropped this VPS multiple times in the past. Recently it reached a new low and I found it necessary to write about it since I got it confirmed by multiple parties. It is that the network speed to Europe is not acceptable in the slightest for a VPS that supposedly has a 1 Gbps uplink towards the internet.
Here is a speedtest I did on my VPS using nginx configured with h2 multiaccept to my ADSL internet subscription in Russia. This is its peak low speed (8 Kilobyte/s), with the peak highest speed burst being around ~60 Kilobyte/s
The route travels to America the following Cogent to New York? > Time Warner Cable > Hostigation Datacentre> VPS on node e5clt19-lg I have tested the same over another fibre optic ISP in Norway using a slightly different route Telia > Time Warner Cable > Hostigation Datacentre > VPS on node e5clt19-lg. This route got anywhere from 80 Kilobyte/s to the max burst up speed of 200 Kilobyte/s. Both of these results I would frankly call unacceptable.
However, now comes the fun part of my report. Multiple tests to Poland, Germany, Italy and the likes which I'm not going to post here has one feature in common, they all seem to max out at 2 MB/s to ~2.6 MB/s with the sole difference in routing that they are going through level3 > Hostigation Datacentre > VPS on node e5clt19-lg without passing through a Cogent/Telia/TWC route to America, which I have tested to be able to utilize the max bandwidth of the internet lines from Russia and Norway to America using another VPS provider that is based in New York and peers with Cogent/Telia. It is for this reason I believe the 7 hops route over Time Warner Cable in America is to blame for the low transfer speed. Furthermore, the route over Level3 is only about 2-3 hops compared to the 5-8 hops over Telia/Cogent and 7 hops in America over TWC.
With the end of my report I would like to mention that the speed if you transit over Level3 that reaches the max of around ~2.6 MB/s is adequate for an American VPS especially if your max internet bandwidth is around 30Mbps, but the people like me which use the route over Time Warner Cable is providing an unacceptable speed which I have only recorded going upwards to max 200 Kilobyte/s, or as low as 8 Kilobyte/s. The speed is not good enough and I would certainly not stand for it either.
