[SOLVED] [VPS 2] pinging ipv4 addresses
#1

Terminal

[dummy@server ~]# ping google.com
ping: socket: Address family not supported by protocol
[dummy@server ~]# ping -4 google.com
ping: socket: Address family not supported by protocol

Pinging ipv4 addresses always outputs that error. Pinging IPv6 addresses seems to be fine.
As you might see from the log above, it also doesn't work even with the -4 flag.

A bug with OpenVZ that causes this has showed up before but got fixed already. https://bugs.openvz.org/browse/OVZ-6744

I already ran "reconfigure networking". (I did it because  IPv6 pings wasn't working before. (RIP 200 days of uptime  Cry )) IPv4 pings doesn't still work.

@Conan,

That's kinda strange. I never have problem pinging ipv4 addresses from my VPS 2.

I test ping again a few minutes ago from it and here is my result:

Terminal

XXX@server:~# ping google.com
PING google.com (216.58.219.46) 56(84) bytes of data.

Unbelievable. Are you using latest packages and the system fully updated?

You could match the version and check if it was the updated packages our the old ones still.

I just read the bug details.amazing.thanks.

Yes, the iputils pacakage is up to date. Even all packages are currently up to date.

I already tried reinstalling it.

According to the OpenVZ website, the kernel is pretty old. https://openvz.org/Download/kernel
The version of the kernel on Fuzzyhost's host node is 2.6.32-042stab112.15

That bug was fixed, but the version where it's fixed is CU-2.6.32-042stab113.X which is a bit newer than Fuzzyhost's 2.6.32-042stab112.15.

I believe I found the same issue in Centos' bug tracker. Seems like the latest iputils package (iputils 20160308-8.el7) is the cause of the issue and the user who filed the issue installed an older version of iputils as a workaround.

I wonder if this is related to this iputils Github issue

@thirty_speed
Judging by the version number of the iputils package, it's from march 8 2016. It's working beyond that date actually. It just stopped working recently.

I know the bug was fixed. I saaid that the host node runs an older kernel which might be an issue. (Another bug? We don't now)

Perhaps you should open a support ticket and try to see if the host is aware of any issues regarding this. Seems a bit strange you're having this issue, but I do think an updated kernel should be necessary.

@Jake AFAIK the problem is that contacting a provider directly is not allowed by the rules. It will result in losing the VPS. Read the "What is not allowed?" section in https://freevps.us/announcement-13.html if you haven't yet.

I won't post it here if I'm not sure it's not an issue with the provider.
We're not allowed to open support tickets directly.

@Staff, the issue got resolved when the host node got rebooted a afew days ago. Sorry for not updating.
