Changes to the 2nd VPS system
#11
This is a fair change as we have gone through some situations unexpected. I personally not being able to own a VPS to my need and I feel same for the others. Second VPS can be optional and be released if the VPSs are unused. As for now, we lack VPSs and the change is needed according to the time. Thanks cw1998 aka Chris for the change.

Yep. If you're switching the first and not the second you should be able to swap first round.

Oh, okay, thanks!  I wanted to switch out my VPS 15 (first one) as soon as I can.
Thank you HostUS for VPS 16!

Check out @coreyman's Free VPS Club for a free VPS with only 15 posts/month!
No waiting required to get a free VPS, just make posts and apply!

I think I found a big bug in this system !

I read this, "we believe that the top servers should be distributed more evenly over the members that have joined more recently, but are equally contributing to the site at the moment".

Also this, "Yep. If you're switching the first and not the second you should be able to swap first round".

Now I could grab a high specification vps and then a low one. Make the high one my second and then swap the 1st one, which is the low one, with another powerful one. Now I have two powerful ones and this is not even distribution.

It will take couple of months, but it is doable. Tounge

Please don't beat me up guys. Tounge **goes into hiding**

Indeed, I have noticed that someone like me could devour all the good stuff. And I certainly did (when I had the time). As for splitting the giveaway into 2 phases. Do I see it successful? Sure. But I wonder how much until someone is going to abuse that as well. As someone mentioned above (although, probably not as simple as he might imagine). And whether the staff members are up for the extra workload.

The problem with new users is that all they care is to grab a server to host their samp, cramp, sh!tamp, mineshaft, counterspit, whatever. And then most likely ditch the server for the next month or get spammy on the forum. Otherwise we wouldn't see so many servers available in each giveaway. I mean, if everyone kept their VPS, there shouldn't be so many. That always baffles me.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how it goes.

Yep. We'd have to be careful with allowing people to switch their VPSes around if we do it that way. I only stayed the rules as they currently stood, but of course rules can be changed if necessary.

That conclusion "the demand is largely gone" is questionable. I guess we got only 20% in May because many members (including me) were forced to drop one VPS when FuzzyHosts was gone. It was truly not my intention to drop it if FuzzyHosts was still there.

So, it makes more sense to use the data in April to judge the real demand of the 2nd VPS system.

And root cause of the recent demand drop is clearly because of the insufficient number of VPSs with similar spec (at least 2GB RAM) in the pool after May.

Perhaps it is more like "the supply is largely gone" instead of "the demand is largely gone". Let's face it.

Nice catch bro! I suggest that for those own 2 VPSs, they must drop one of them when they apply for a switch (no matter they want to switch their first VPS or second VPS).

This is similar to a reset you guys discussed above, but a reset will be triggered only when they apply for a switch.

Of course I hope all these measures should be temporary. It is better we can recover the supply we lost, rather than just re-distributing a few good VPSs among newer and senior members.

Well What exactly would be consider has a high-end and what would be a low end ? Right now have VPS27 which is a 1GB KVM VPS and VPS18 which has just 512MB. I thinks this is pretty much a high-end and low-end combo.

@rudra
The second VPS can't be switched to make it your "1st" VPS afaik. If it's your second VPS, it will stay that way until you drop it.
That's how it seems for me.

There is nothing banning a switch in the rules in their current form ! Also that would be more unfair than say letting people get hold of two high end vps albeit with a lot of hassle. I mean anyone might want to drop one vps and keep one they like. The one he wants to drop might as well be the first one. I did that and dropped my vps7 which I could keep cause I had done the postings. Another example being SLC could choose to keep the dedicated and drop the vps13.

A friendly reminder to everyone that this thread is for discussing the changes that have just happened to the second VPS system, not for proposing other changes. Please provide general feedback in the feedback forum.
