Changes to the 2nd VPS system

We feel that this has created the perception that the top scorers own a majority of the largest VPSs available. While they have worked hard to build up their scores over the years, we believe that the top servers should be distributed more evenly over the members that have joined more recently, but are equally contributing to the site at the moment.

Although I'm OK with the main gist of the change in giving the second VPS, I was VERY concerned and also disappointed to read the above.  I've spent hours and hours to build my posts portfolio for the very reason that the giveaway COMPETITION is based on quality posts for hosting - the more quality posts you make the greater the chance for a better VPS.  I was completely in awe of the system and before I started to post in February of last year I was just as much in awe of the rules, all of which I read in great detail before I started to post.  As far as I could see the rules were aimed to make this a quality post to host Forum where those who work hard get an advantage in the giveaways - like for me that's a huge incentive to continue to deliver quality posts.  It's also a very TRANSPARENT system where those with the highest scores get the better VPSs.  It is as it should be.  If you want a better VPS then you have to work hard at making more quality posts.  That for me is absolutely FAIR.

As far as I can see the whole giveaway is going to become nebulous, as it will now be up to the Admin to decide who he thinks is the better candidate for a VPS, rather than a very transparent rule for everyone to very easily grasp that X person has X score that is higher than Y person.  Is it possible for the staff to tell us EXACTLY what the new rules will be in light of your new policy?  Like how will you be able to assess new quality members' qualifications for a bigger VPS on the same level as those quality members who have been around for longer and who have worked very hard on their portfolio of posts? What will the criteria be?

I just think they are trying to make it harder for people to go for two big vps. It will remain possible to do so. But only through considerable hoop jumping. I dont see how that is bad.! Umm, the only change in the rules is you can ask for a vps in the first round if it is your first one or if it is going to replace your first one.
Many thanks to Freevps, Chris (cw1998), The Guy( ID 4810), optimus, GHP and the other  staff members.

I appreciate your concern, but the giveaway is still primarily based on your score, and very little, if any, admin discretion comes into play. I still choose winners based on score. The application with the top score gets their first pick if it is available, then second, and so on. This change is not to undermine the work of those who contribute high quality posts. They will still be able to get the best VPSs available in the second round if they decide to apply.

This may not be the best way in your opinion to manage giving out second VPSs, but we think its a good compromise between keeping a 2nd VPS system, and removing it completely.
Everyone with a 2nd VPS at the minute is not losing the VPS, they will keep it until they lose it naturally, be it getting replaced by applying for and winning a new VPS in a giveaway, not completely posts, or voluntarily requesting for it to be removed.

@cw1998
I have a few questions.

We can still replace the first VPS in the first round despite having a second one right?
If we give up our first VPS, is our second VPS considered as first VPS then?
Can we even change what we call first or second VPS? (If we can't, that seems to be better. I think it might help mitigate @rudra's concern a bit)

Thank you Smile

Yes

Yes, but this requires staff approval. With the rules change, we will be carefully examining requests to look for signs of potential abuse. This should not affect users that wish to swap their VPSes for legitimate reasons.

Ahh i completely agree with these changes, even I at one point thought of getting a 2nd VPS, but commitments in real life caused me to lose the 1 VPS I had. Well thankfully, most of my commitments now are over, I hope to apply again in the next giveaway.

It sounds like you assume the first VPS should be the more powerful one if a member hold 2 VPSes. I think it is not always the case. Because most members won their 2nd VPS at the time when they had more posts (hence higher score).

So, for members already holding 2 VPSes, most of them should still possibly get two "big" VPSes without any hoop jumping.

Now what is not so clear is that even if hoop jumping is needed, it is still possible as long as the admin considers the member "legitimate". It is more or less up to the admin to decide who can eventually get two "big" VPSes.

Thanks for the detailed response Chris.  This is much appreciated.  I get it now.  And I have no problem about the second VPS.  In fact I think I mentioned one or two giveaways ago when we had a discussion about this that there should be greater leeway in Admin decisions for the second VPS. You're totally right of course that this is a better compromise than having to remove the 2nd VPS system.  We're indeed fortunate to have this - thank you for making this possible.   :y:
