Major WordPress Update - 4.9 - themes
#1
Today when I accessed my WordPress site on my VPS there were 9 updates waiting for me, which in its own right signifies a major WordPress update. We get these updates regularly, but this one seems to be a bigger one. It would probably be a good idea to update your sites if you're not on automatic updates.  All of my themes needed to be updated, so for me that means that the WP update to 4.9 is design focused.  It's supposed to make the customizer tool and widgets more feature rich.

By definition of course if there isn't an update for your theme, then you need to check whether the developer of your theme is still interested in the theme.  If not, it would probably be a good idea to find out if the theme has been made redundant or nulled - if yes to the latter the theme can turn into a security risk.

Haha .... very wise indeed!

I've been working with my blog tonight for a couple of hours and looks as though everything is OK.  Then again, my themes are usually very simple and uncomplicated - maybe a little bit boring - haven't had an explosion yet. Tounge

Update to WP 4.9.1. It fixes four major security issues:
  •     Use a properly generated hash for the newbloguser key instead of a determinate substring.
  •     Add escaping to the language attributes used on html elements.
  •     Ensure the attributes of enclosures are correctly escaped in RSS and Atom feeds.
  •     Remove the ability to upload JavaScript files for users who do not have the unfiltered_html capability.

It seems like security fixes for me. I upgraded my WordPress site and it is working without problems until this moment. But I have like 5 or 6 plugins and the theme that I'm using hasn't been update since last year and no problem at all too.
Thanks FreeVPS.us and Hostigation for VPS 18

I'm curious to know which plugins fell apart.  I haven't had that happening to me in all of the years with WordPress (although I've heard of people complaining), so I'm curious to check which kind of plugins can potentially fall apart when WordPress is upgraded.

I just updated to 4.9.2 and all my plugins are working fine without anything breaking. All my plugins did need an update however but no breakage occurred.

As it looks to be a major security update, I updated my WordPress as well, as of now I don't see anything broken on my site. But you don't know when a plug-in misbehaves as it is been made for the previous version and has not been tested for the latest version. Even though I don't have much plugins also the theme is a simple free one.
I hope the developers update the themes as well as the plug-in for the latest WordPress so the we don't have to worry that something can break anytime.

Think that when the plugin breaks when there has been a major security update - that's a giveaway information that that plugin isn't secure any longer and one should drop it.  (a) the owner of the plugin is sleeping on the job as he must have received info before us of the security issue that was the reason for the WordPress Update and isn't paying attention to his plugin (b) and there is something in the plugin that is sensitive to that update.
