VPS 18 - No Swap?
#1
Hello FreeVPS,

I've just received my VPS 18. According to the Requirements page, it supposed to have 512MB ram & 512MB vswap. My SolusVM panel shows that I have no swap.

My VPS also shows this:

Code:
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:           512         35        476          7          0         12
-/+ buffers/cache:         22        489
Swap:            0          0          0

Is this a mistake?

Thanks For the VPS 18 FreeVPS.

I think that it’s a mistake from a change made a long time ago. VPS18 originally had a gigabyte of RAM with no swap, but had its resources reduced to allow for more servers.

Essentially, @Ignis probably forgot.

you can always create a swap file on a normal partition and use that as swap you know. Similar performance.. Not any performance hit if you do it this way.

I've successfully created the swap to the proper specifications.

EDIT: OK, so after doing some research, I found this blog that reportedly makes "fake swap". But, that was fake. when I run

Code:
swapon /swapfile

I get: swapon: /swapfile: swapon failed: Operation not permitted

Thanks For the VPS 18 FreeVPS.

The problem is and was always SolusVM and its reseller panel.

When you create a VPS and select 512 MB RAM and 512 MB vSwap it will equal in a VPS with only 512 MB RAM and no vSwap. This is the great logic of SolusVM... If you set the vSwap amount = RAM amount you get no Swap and if you set it below that you will get a error message from SolusVM and the VPS won't be created.

In order to create a VPS with 512 MB RAM and 512 MB vSwap you have to select 1024 MB vSwap when creating the VPS. Don't ask me why. As I said this is the darned logic of SolusVM. I was surprised by this, too. After the former owner of Hostigation Mr. Flavin explained to me how it works I got it though even if it's twisted. And this is always so, with all providers using SolusVM.

The funny thing is if your provider doesn't assign enough vSwap for the reseller account... let's say accidently 256 MB and you are trying to create a 512 MB RAM VPS without vSwap you will simply fail... You just can't create one unless you go down on the VPS RAM to 256 MB too. This has happened in the past with a few of our sponsors and the VPS creation process had to be postponed while the issue has been fixed.

TL;DR - SolusVM is and will always be a half cooked potato. Just look at how bad the development has gone after it was bought by OnApp. All I'm going to say is "SolusVM 2 VERY SOON™". All in all the reseller panel is the massively crippled little brother. Once a VPS has been create you cannot modify it - no upgrades possible without a full termination.

@Hidden Refuge

I've noticed this as well.

Also, to anyone using the reseller panel, please note that any OpenVZ container is created with the default template (512MB/512MB RAM and vSwap, etc) before being resized. Reinstalling during this time will, erm, "mess things up. You've been warned. (This only occurs if the node is facing a spike in CPU usage. Generally, this is instant, but there are edge cases.)
I'm not going to be that person who throws up another signature which displays my posts for the month. My goal is to be active enough to reach the post requirements without staring at a counter thinking, "Great! I'm done my posts, I can log off until next month."

I'll try rebuilding the VPSes when I get the chance.

Ok, thanks. I'm experiencing the same issue. Sad

Hey. Is there any update on this? I would really like to be able to push my production server live.

I was delayed in my return due to engine failure on my car. I will have time to work on this tomorrow. Anyone who needs their VPS rebuilt should PM me after backing up their data, as the rebuild process will destroy all data on the VPS.
