[IMPORTANT] State of FreeVPS Directory & Discussion and it's future
#31
Oh boy this is the dreaded moment I always worried about. Time to let vps18 go, Once I have hard since the start. Now I really need to get a paid vps. Time to take a look at those cheap vps offers at reliable providers.

Big Thanks for @dmmcintyre3 all the staff members who have done a great job of running things here from the begin. Smile

@Hidden Refuge I contacted AnyNode and they're fine with moving the server over to my account. All I need to is for an email from the FreeVPS side and everything should work out.

Side note: It's sad to see FreeVPS in this state. Most sponsors are gone -- and frankly, unless we get new ones, I don't see the community growing back to what it once was.

The fvps.us domain has been used to provide shortlinks to threads, posts, announcements and so on in the past. Sooner or later in the past it stopped working after some MyBB update(s) broke it. @dmmcintyre3 kept the domain all the time I guess and paid for it. It redirects to freevps.us though.

Thanks for the info HR.  One last question.  Are we still going to have the monthly FreeVPS Giveaway?  Are we going to continue with our current Sponsors who are still with us?

Can't say this is entirely unexpected.

I thought I remembered this site having ads, and I remembered turning off my adblocker here to support this site. When and why were ads removed considering that ads seems like probably one of the main revenue sources (or am I wrong on that)? Did I miss an announcement about that?

I'm a bit sad to part with my VPS 18. But I'm not doing anything important with it so I'll live.

The community has a part to play as well which is to post quality content. Unfortunately, not really seeing that for some time now.

Hello @doghouch

That are some great news! Good to hear that anyNode is also giving green light for a service migration. One more thing though Wink .

I have received your private message regarding my previous reply here. Unfortunately it didn't contain all necessary information. Please reply to my answer to your last message with the additional requested information. Once I have everything compiled together I will open a ticket at anyNode and ask for a migration to your anyNode account.

@IEpicDestroyer A NAT service is no solution for us. It would create more problems, support and workload than necessary in the current state. Also NAT service is like a half backed pie. It's just unprofessional and "quick and dirty".

Given how NAT works most people wouldn't be able to use the service because they can literally only work with defaults. So if a program doesn't work as intended because it cannot use a default port, they're going to give up, throw the towel in or a mass of support threads will start to roll over us for every little thing.

I don't mean to offend anyone but I've been here since 2012 as an Administrator taking care of everything including doing support. I know the knowledge level of most people that have a VPS here. It generally isn't in such a good state.

This whole NAT story just isn't a solution at all!

@deanhills The forum will continue to operate as usual with the current existing sponsors and their sponsored VPSs. We're working on new ways to gain new sponsors and expand our rewards and opportunities for sponsors.

At this stage and in the current state we cannot guartanee any monthly giveaways, especially if there are no VPSs to give away because everyone is holding a VPS and doing everything to keep it.

@thirthy_speed Advertising has been removed as mentioned in the OP. The problem is the following: the ad revenue reduces so much that it becomes impossible to pay for VPS 18s, hosting and domain(s) after taxes have been applied. Hence why we're working on getting advertising online again on a different account.

You probably know how it works when you're working and earning money. There is a threshold (atleast in Germany for example it is at 9.000 €/year which results in a monthly income of 750 €) of money you can earn without having to pay tax for it. I also work and I earn more than this every month and so I do also pay tax. If I were to take in the ad revenue my tax rates would go up and I would have less money thus having the revenue effectively reduced by a big amount.

All of this gets even worse if you're not married. In Germany for example being a single is very expensive. Singles pay most of the tax of all time. So their income is being reduced quite a lot. Many need additional small jobs to their main job to make it over the months. Governments at its best...  :s

TL;DR: Tax decrease ad revenue so much that not enough revenue is left to pay for all the services. Therefore ads have been taken offline.

I have to agree about the post quality. It has been rather low for a long time now and isn't improving.

@Hidden Refuge Holy paradox batman! Looks like sometimes when you earn more, you earn less. But I get what you're saying. Looks like the best approach is to set up an offshore shell company in a tax haven. Time to read up on those Paradise papers...

Also on the to-do list: get married to pay less taxes.

Glad to know the giveaways are continuing and you're working on new sponsors.  You know @HR I feel increased energy going round and not only from the members but the staff as well and no doubt current and future sponsors must feel the energy too.  We may have loss of sponsors, but having you around in Red again is a fantastic bonus and an awesome silver lining.  I feel a revival coming that is probably going to be different and maybe even rock the boat and our comfort zones a little, but definitely interesting times ahead. Rock on!

@deanhills

I wholeheartedly hope that FreeVPS is restored to its former glory.

Perhaps this was the wake up call we needed?
"That but this blow
Might be the be-all and the end-all here,
But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,
We'ld jump the life to come."

-- William Shakespeare

Rest in peace, FreeVPS. The forum will be sorely missed.

@Hidden Refuge if you put it that way, might get tricky to manage the NAT service as people get lazy to try and figure out that extra work. It'll work for web servers, won't as well for other things. If only Kimsufi allowed additional IPs for the same $3 setup fee..
Thank you HostUS for VPS 16!

Check out @coreyman's Free VPS Club for a free VPS with only 15 posts/month!
No waiting required to get a free VPS, just make posts and apply!

We've finally received an update regarding the termination of the reseller plan for VPS 18s.

The VPS 18 reseller account at anyNode (Hostigation) was paid until the 25th February 2018. It will not be extended. Therefore the 25th February is the deadline! Take backups of your VPS 18 ASAP!
