GMail vs Hotmail
Gmail is the winner its compact and also works on low-speed connection really Microsoft just keeps adding resources and it takes time to load.Instead of design they should focus on connectivity.
I don't see much of a difference between the two other than if servers don't like e-mail hosts, then they seem to block hotmail and yahoo, rather than gmail. Also, if one travels to a different region, it is easier to make gmail happy with just completing the secondary e-mail name, rather than having to make sure the alternative e-mail of hotmail is a non-hotmail account. As hotmail insists on a code.

I like Hotmail's layout much better than gmail though. I find it much more user-friendly.
I have been using both for quite a while. These facts might not be so obvious:
1. You can only make 7 Gmail accounts with a single Phone number
You can make infinite emails on Hotmail
2. When you log in from a different region to your Gmail it will ask some security questions
You can easily login to a Hotmail account from anywhere, but you can't change any data
3. Hotmail locks you out if you don't log in for a while and you have to prove that you are human via an SMS verification. You can only use a single phone number around 10 times so if you are locked out a lot you will have to get a new phone number or contact support just to get in.
4. If you lose your access to your Gmail account you can quickly get it back via an online form/You have to contact support for Hotmail

There are some big differences. I think Hotmail is a dying service. It has started going downhill for a while now. Gmail is becoming some kind of all purpose tool which is moving beyond the limits of an email service. But there are few things which makes Hotmail is good for some people, specially if you are paranoid about privacy. Google scan all the mails you send. Their ads are based on content of your mails. Hotmail doesn't do that at least haven't done that till now.

Something I'm interested is if Gmail going to disable or delete accounts in case of long inactivity periods like Yahoo does. I think Hotmail does that if your account is inactive more than 9 months.

I use GMAIL more than hotmail, because gmail is not hard on my eyes, hotmail email inbox theme can be changed but still.
Gmail recovery system is more good than hotmail, and they do not remove email.Hotmail removed my email because i didn't logged for 3 months,(Shitty thing ever happend).
Gmail have a new hangout system, And other things you can login with gmail now, like paypal youtube everythign is connected. I prefer gmail more.

I don't see the lack of security with Hotmail.  I find Hotmail almost intrusive with its security.  For example if one would open one's e-mail account in a different region than what Hotmail is used to, one has to go through a security check and get a code.  Hotmail has been around for much longer than Gmail, and there are probably millions and millions of users of Hotmail who have been using their e-mail accounts from the beginning of time.  There are also users that have both Hotmail and Gmail - I'm one of those.  I use Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo.  Gmail is the more convenient one out of the three, I do feel safe with Hotmail though and Yahoo has improved its service considerably since it was hacked last.

Gmail doesn't disable inactive accounts.  I've had ones that have been inactive for longer than a year and have been able to get in quite easy.  Yahoo puts the accounts in hibernation.  I'm not sure what Hotmail does - if I don't miss it, Hotmail also puts the account into hibernation.  Must say I've never had an e-mail account that has been disabled.  Could be that I've just been lucky.
I was talking about privacy not security. I think recently all web mails providers has started step up security. Specially Yahoo and Hotmail. and I was telling Hotmail is better than Gmail when it comes to privacy.

I don't know about Hibernation with yahoo inactive accounts but they used remove all mails from those accounts. It happened couple of times to me too. I also have all mail accounts from all these three providers but I use Hotmail only for Bing Webmaster account and Yahoo mail for Flickr and Yahoo Answers. I use Gmail for the most of day to day stuff.

In my opinion, Gmail is far superior to Hotmail. I find Outlook.com's email filters extremely intrusive and often incorrect -many legitimate emails are marked as spam and many spam emails are marked as legitimate.

I think gmail is much better, but I don't trust any e-mail, better make your own mail system
I choose gmail over hotmail.

My reason for this is, a lot of microsoft hosted email services tends to be sent straight to the spam mail a lot. (Based from my experiences)
I also think it's a dying service. Gmail has a much better interface IMHO.
